What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Pool: Your Construction Journey

What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Pool: Your Construction Journey

So you’ve decided to get a pool. This is a big deal! You’ve chosen your design and now your pool builder will soon be turning your backyard into a pool paradise. But now what? You need to know the pool construction process so you can know what to expect and make the whole thing more fun.

Plans and Permits

You’ve worked with a designer and had a preconstruction meeting with your project manager to discuss timelines. Your design is done, and the materials have been selected. Now the pool builder will get all the necessary permits to start construction. This takes some time, but it’s a critical step to make sure the pool meets all local codes and standards. The fun part is coming soon!

Prep and Excavation

Now that all permits are in place, it’s time to get your yard ready for a big change. Preparation is key to making sure the area is clear where the pool will go. Now it’s time to dig. This is where you’ll start to see your pool take shape. Excavation won’t take long, but please be aware that it can get loud and messy. Heavy equipment will be used to remove and move dirt. Trees and shrubs will need to be removed, and shrubs must also be taken out of the way along with fencing.

Initial Plumbing and Framework

This stage brings in the plumbing systems that will power the pool’s filter, drains, and other cleaning systems. Once this is done, the steel framework is built around the edges and bottom of where the pool will be. This framework is engineered and approved before it’s installed. During this stage, the electrical systems are also installed, and the grounding of the framework and other equipment is done. Proper installation is key to long-term functionality and safety.

Shell and Deck Preparation

Now the fun part. This is when the gunite is applied to the steel framework and your pool is born. The pool is really starting to take shape. Stairs are built, and custom features like bubblers, benches, and waterfalls are installed. The area around the shell of the pool is leveled to prepare for the deck installation.

Finalized Plumbing and Wiring

During this stage, the pump, filter and other equipment is installed and the plumbing that was done earlier is hooked up to the pool equipment. Electrical work is completed and any lights, switches and control systems are tied into your home’s circuit breakers. It’s all coming together!

Tile, Decking, and Finishing

This is where the magic happens. The deck and surrounding landscaping are complete, and the pool blends in with the rest of the outdoor space. The decking can be pavers, stamped concrete, natural stone, or other materials. Once the deck is done, the focus shifts to the finishing. The inside of the pool is hand-troweled, waterproofed, and then finished with the chosen material, whether it’s smooth plaster, tile, or a pebble finish. Skimmer covers, drain covers, and other pool surface hardware are installed at this stage as well.

Filling, Testing, and Startup

Now that everything is installed, it’s time to fill the pool with water. This is the exciting part as the pool comes to life for the first time. The team will test everything, the filtration, heating, and lighting to make sure it’s all working properly. They will also balance the water chemistry so it’s safe and comfortable for swimming. A service professional will meet with you and go over all the functionality and how to operate the pool. Make sure to take notes and ask any questions you may have.
